Description (2500-3000 words):

In this task, you are required to apply your knowledge of observational methods and child development to write a report on the growth and development of a young child aged between 6 months to 8 years and identify ways to further support their learning and development. You will demonstrate your knowledge of the selected child’s growth and development by analysing observations in relation to contemporary theoretical perspectives and current literature that has been studied in the course. You will demonstrate ethical standards and a professional standard of report writing.

This assessment item requires you to demonstrate that you can:

  • Apply a range of observation tools to gather and record data about a child and the contexts in which they participate;
  • Analyse observations and other data appropriately, cross-referenced to the observations/tools provided in the appendices;
  • Effectively and professionally interpret the findings with awareness of cultural influences on interpretation;
  • Outline how the child’s: a. Physical development , b. Social development, c. Emotional development, d. Cognitive development,  Language and Communication might be promoted in relation to how children usually develop from birth to eight years;
    Write a clearly structured report using the conventions of academic writing (report format; accurate grammar, spelling, punctuation and APA referencing style 7).

Criteria & Marking:

  1. Apply ethical standards and show knowledge of own cultural influences in studying a young child;
  2. Use the required observational methods;
  3. Analyse and interpret observations using the Child-Centered Approach;
  4. Discuss findings using a Child-Centered Approach;
  5. Critically analyse and discuss the community in supporting the Study Child and his/her family.
